#8sunday 6 March, 2016 A dish best served cold – final

Greetings, Weekend Writing Warriors!  These are the last sentences in  my contemporary short story about a woman who chooses to even the score.

Marian undergoes a secret, 8 month long physical transformation in preparation for one event – one night: the Advertising Industry Annual Awards Event where the well-heeled and well-connected rubbed shoulders with the business-rich and ad-world-famous. As runner up to the Winning Ad Campaign, in a move which causes some surprise, she arranges to introduce the Winner (Andrea Williams), on stage, in front of everyone who is anyone in the Industry. Unrecognisably sexy and polished she meets her arch-nemesis on stage Todd Eccleston – her boss, and the architect of her misery, who is suitably taken with her transformation. After her speech, she introduces a video of the winning advertisement, and  takes a limousine to the airport while everyone watches … to the very, very, very end.

In the hall, the advert had reached its last line.

“Chlontiran. Quality of life back in your hands.”

The screen flickered, and cleared.

The applause died down, as the larger than life figures of Tod Eccleston and Andrea Williams, entered a well-appointed office, in an unmistakably intimate embrace.

“It’s settled then? That lump of lard, Diamond, is out of the running?”  Her voice was heavy with lust. “Yes, sexy, sweet  Andrea, you get the award…”

The room erupted.

Oh! And if you are into VERY short stories: I have started a collection of 100 word stories that I will be adding to on a (hopefully) regular basis – see the library tab on the top of the page.

  1. Ooh, the fallout from that should be exciting–and no one can yell at her, because she’s already gone! Hopefully she’s moving on to something special, now that she’s had her revenge.

  2. Great ending! I love that you leave some details to readers’ imagination, like how the “stars” in that little scene at the end reacted to seeing that right up there. Thanks for sharing that story with us.

    1. Thank you, Marcia. It was something different for me. I sincerely believe in leaving lots of space for imagination. The balance of how much, however, is a challenge

  3. Yikes! Obviously not something either one of them wanted anyone to see. Sounds like great revenge. I really enjoyed this story! 🙂
