Greetings, Weekend Writing Warriors!

Welcome to another installment of ‘Falling into that New Career’.

Daniel is not your normal hero. In fact, very far from it. Inopportunely rescued from a suicide attempt (by a 2 second admin error), he is plunged into an alternate reality, where he is supposed to be an already deceased ‘specimen’. Fortunately the workers overseeing his ‘collection’ were less than eager to change his status to that required by their paperwork, and he finds himself ‘relocated’. The only problem is, the Multiverse is a pretty big place, and he did not get returned to Earth.

His story continues in this second chapter (Falling into that New Career)  of Lab Rat (this is the working title only) where he finds himself in the Alien Immigration Offices, having to complete ‘paperwork’ with his case worker Zith Grewnfarn.

“That was ‘Septic’ Saucer.” Daniel watched Zith scratch out the errant ‘c’.

“And what did you drink Daniel?”

“Um, a strawberry milkshake?” He watched Zith put a question mark against ‘language skills – level 5’ and recorded ‘non-alcoholic’ neatly next to ‘drink’ and ‘Septic Saucer’.

“Were you alone Daniel, or did you have company?”

“Alone.” Although the one grubby guy wearing biker leathers had sat on the stool next to him, and had given him a long, considering, not-too-unfriendly stare.

  1. 😀 Oh, that snippet gave me a big smile. Your writing is delightfully creative! I’m never sure what the next sentence will introduce into the story–and that is amazing!

    Anthology of short stories, please???

  2. I love the names conjured up by some of my fellow authors. Zith Grewnfarn is a great name! And Septic Saucer too. You can have such fun with names in SF writing. Disheartening to learn that bureaucrats survived into the future worlds. Great snippet.

  3. I’m not sure I’d trust a milkshake at a place with a name like that! Now I wonder what this suspicious character may have done–and whether or not Daniel plans to mention him. It might be better to lie than to be thought crazy.
