#8sunday 17/04/30 Rewired 02

Greetings, Weekend Writing Warriors!

This is the next snippet of a work-in-progress called “Rewired”. All packed up, and ready to go, Amahle drops off her appartment key. This week we learn more about our main character.

When she came back to herself, the quality of light had changed and the shadows on the path and road had shifted. Checking her modest wristwatch, she calculated that she had lost an hour, just standing there.

None of the doctors or specialists could tell her what was happening to her. Her body was healthy and normal for a woman her age. But, in her mind, something had just started rewriting the neural pathways in her brain. In the last sixteen months, she had watched on helplessly as her cognitive functioning crumbled to the barest levels of memory and survival.

During the last few weeks, her brain appeared to have reached a plateau, and she was left suspended in a state where the magic of her highest reasoning and most abstract thought were incomprehensible and unattainable. The scientists and medics were confounded and embarrassed and had sent her back to her sterile hospital room feeling chastened like a naughty child.

  1. Great snippet. It brings up so many questions. How she got there? What’s happening to her mind? Will the deterioration stop? Good job making us wonder.
