Every Sunday Weekend Writing Warriors invites writers (of all shapes and sizes) to submit 8 sentences of a work or work in progress. It is a great way to put yourself out there and to connect with a vibrant and supportive community of other writers. This is my submission.
These are the next few lines to one of my (as yet untitled) works in progress. (They have been edited slightly to fit the sentence limit.)
#8sunday April 11, 2015 Scott’s Story 2
“Something special, then?” The pilot gestured towards the music case with his grizzled head.
“I suppose you could say that.” Her non-committal response was aimed at closing down further niceties but he didn’t get the hint.
“Don’t see many stellar musicians this side of the Orion belt.” His curiosity was palpable. How should she play this one – naïve ingénue just escaped the hallowed halls of the Walterford Conservatory, or the worldly wise, cynical diva?

Cynical diva might turn him off, but then again some guys like divas! 🙂

I like the “this side of Orion’s belt” line. Very relateable, even for those of us not well versed in sci fi 🙂 Great eight!

Thank you Sara. It’s a very good point you have there. Readers and writers of sci-fi have their own code, that they assume everyone knows. I will definitely keep this in mind as I develop the story.

She’s running circles of intelligence around him, it seems. I guess he should just ignore him? 🙂 Good 8, Kim!

Thanks Teresa. She is very sharp, maybe too sharp? Fortunately not many people she comes across seem to notice.

I enjoy the fact that she has two such different sets of responses she feels she can fall back upon. And of course I’m wondering why she’s there and what’ll happen next. Enjoying the story! Want to read more LOL.

Thank you Veronica. Having a story ready for each eventuality is a strong point for her.

Aww, it’s so annoying when people won’t take a hint. She might have to get a little less subtle with this guy!

Thank you Caitlin. Yes, some people need a shove, more than a push.

Great snippet. Her calculations really get my curiosity going (like the pilot!). She should stop being so interesting if she doesn’t want to get into conversations.

Ah yes, the joy of unwanted conversations! I love how she’s considering how to play it. I got a possible double meaning from “stellar musician.”

Thank you Christina. Yes, sometimes too many questions can be a problem.

I like your POV character’s calculating thoughts about how to respond–they raise lots of interesting questions. Another interesting question: what does ‘stellar musician’ mean?
